When it comes to technology, printers have never really been something to consider as revolutionary. They went from dot matrix to black and white, and from bubble jet to laser, but overall their purpose didn’t change, unlike computers. The Xerox Phaser 4500 printer is an example of an older model, still in use today, still producing a great end product with its Phaser 4500 cartridges.

The 4500 is a black and white model (or monochromatic) that’s designed for office printing. It prints relatively quickly as well, being a laser jet, so it’s perfect for those occasions when you need a hundred copies of a report, a hundred resumes, etc. It does its job for an office printer, but that’s it. It’s definitely obsolete if you’re looking to print photographs or heavily detail-oriented images.

Being obsolete means you won’t find it on the shelves in your typical store. You’d have to buy it used either online or at an electronics resale store of some kind. If you’re going to get a new printer, though, it’d be useless to buy this one new even if you could, as newer, more advanced models are generally sold at the same price.

If you have the 4500, or are considering getting it, you’re probably getting it for office-related purposes anyway, which is why there are newer models out there such as the 4510 and 5550. All three models print in black and white, but the newer ones more than likely print faster or hold more paper, or have better Xerox Phaser compatible toner , or something of that nature. Since the prices are relatively the same, it might be better to go new.

If you don’t really want to spend the money on a new one and just want to upgrade by smaller steps, then it should be a relief to know that the 4500 is upgradeable. You can buy various things for it, such as a bigger hard drive to increase the printing queue, and other such aspects that can be upgraded. Getting a few pieces to upgrade a few things may be cheaper than getting a brand new printer, so this may be the route you want to take.

Making the switch is easy enough, however, as most places offer a trade-in policy. If you are trading in an older model printer (such as this one), then you can trade it in for a discount towards the purchase of a newer model. The only issue is that there isn’t really a promise that the money you get from your traded printer will be all that much.

If you’re worried that your model may be too old to be worth anything anymore, don’t be. So long as it’s a printer, they can use it in some way to make your transition easier, even if your printer doesn’t have a listed resale price. You’d have to see the retailer for details. But if you’re going to be throwing out the old printer anyway, you mine as well get something for it, right?

The Xerox Phaser 4500 printer can’t be considered trash as it still offers consistently quality printing. Office printing isn’t all that demanding, other than its consistent use.  It might just end up being more costly to change to a new printer, or it may be more efficient, depending of your situation. One would have to gauge it based on whatever uses they have for it, although if you’re looking for office printers, the variety of uses isn’t all that different from person to person.
